Depression: Ten things I LOVE about Depression

  1. Everyone thinks you are either deaf, stupid or both and they tend to speak to you REALLY LOUDLY! Or .Slowly. So. You. Can. Understand…
  2. With depression you either gain or lose weight but never the one you want.
  3. The Medical profession either want to hug you to death or poison you.
  4. Everyone thinks they can cure you “if you will only pull your socks up!”
  5. The pills you take to make you better could make you commit suicide.
  6. People are always surprised when you tell them you work “just like an ordinary person!”
  7. Everyone thinks you’ll want to hear all about their troubles.
  8. On hearing you have depression your boyfriend/ girlfriend thinks you’ll do a Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction)/ Jack Nicholson (The Shining) on him/her.
  9. Everyone is surprised that your children are normal
  10. Nobody thinks depression will ever happen to THEM.

I should definitely pull your socks up . Warm legs are so much nicer than cold .
On the other hand , "pulling one's socks up" sounds rather tiring . I'd leave that till later .

I sat next to a colleague who had a nervous breakdown. I saw it progress from him being stressed to (literally) rocking in his chair repeating, "I'm f@*ked!"

I have to say it was difficult knowing what to say to him other than take some time off and come back when you're better. Only that wasn't much help as it was fear of redundancy that caused him to have the breakdown in the first place and the last thing he wanted to do was take time off!

What should you say in such situations?

SmitoniusAndSonata - pulling up socks is exhausting but warm legs are nicer than those covered in goose pimples!
Spencer Park - Sorry to hear about your colleague. Never had a nervous breakdown luckily and it is difficult to know what to say other than: "Mate you need to see a doctor now!" In terms of talking or not talking to somone who is depressed treat them normally as you would anyone else unless of course they are having a nervous breakdown/in a seriously bad way when the best thing to do is either a tell them to see a doctor or call one!

Then there's the Health Visitor who helpfully sits forward in her chair and mouths "How's the depression?" like old people say 'Cancer' as if she thinks it's catching. And if the medical profession can't talk about it openly.......

Great list. I find people don't like it when I joke about my depression.

New Mummy - You are so right. They don't like it do they! But as I say to my Mum sometimes joking about it is the only way to stay sane...;)

As someone who lives with chronic depression, I must admit that all ten of your thoughts resonate.

Sadly.

Some friends said to me, "Cheer up, things could be worse."
Being my friends, I took them seriously.
I cheered up.
Things got worse.

May your experience be better! ;)

No not catching but many seem to regard it as if it were.Best help is the simplest...drag youself out of bed each morning and walk, more each day.The 'experts' swear by it, it's cheap and it doesn't over medicate you!

Great informative list! Yes why do people shout and act as though you are stupid as well as depressed?
Not sure if you want it but I awarded you a stylish award.

The last one is so true, and I used to think that too, but then I also thought depression meant that you felt really sad....eek and most of my friends completely ignored my depression, and got awkward and embarrassed if they caught me on a bad day. I think depression makes you feel so unreachable....

I have quite a few friends that suffer from depression. The only thing they have in common is me.
Maybe I'm the cause, and it has nothing to do with you:)
I wish I could reach out and hug you Tattie.
