Going Topless...

There is something wonderful about going topless; it’s exhilarating and, well just liberating.
Dear Charlie says I don’t do it often enough and complains that I am not exactly spontaneous. In my defence I have been known to do it abroad while on holiday, in fact I went topless on a train all the way across France on our honeymoon.
Yesterday I went topless on the school run and had to endure looks of approbation from all the other Mummies who either couldn’t or wouldn’t do the same.
I blame the credit crunch and the eco-stasi.
Mostly the eco-stasi.
The eco-stasi would put the kybosh on most things really but I suppose the thing that drives them nuts is when people flaunt it.
Yesterday I flaunted for all I was worth and I felt great. I had a smile on my face so large the sun probably had to put shades on.
It was absolutely fabulous!
I do love driving sports cars. I especially like driving my own without the top on. I know it’s not the thing to do, that I really should be trying to save the planet and not drive a thirsty little fuzz bomb around the lanes of Suffolk scaring all the locals but I really really needed to blow off a little yesterday and well it seemed so harmless.
It’s not the fastest sports car in the world and for sports car aficionados it probably doesn’t rate at all but for me it’s a taste of all the things I once was or thought I was before children, before commitment, before mortgages and well before I knew the planet really could be saved by regulating how I drive and remembering not to put black plastic bin liners in the recycle bin.
Babe, as she is affectionately known, is an 11-year old Mazda MX5 – the first of the non-pop up headlight versions and she is so sleek. I love her lines. She is a work of art to me and if it wasn’t for her Dear Charlie and I would never have got together in the first place – seriously!
Way back then DC had a problem he couldn’t get a girlfriend and he wouldn’t go out with me in case he ruined our friendship despite the fact that that was all that I had longed for, for years. But hey there are none so blind who cannot see.
So that summer Operation Girlfriend was launched. DC underwent a makeover, went to cordon bleu school to meet girls and bought a car. Having looked at Mercedes, BMW, MG and the like, he finally settled on the new Mazda MX5 ‘cos he could fit his golf bag in the boot.
The car was to act as a lure to attract attention, preferably from girls, and in preparation we decided a road trip would be a good idea. So Dear Charlie and I hopped in the Mazda and drove through France down to the Pyrenees and fell in love – finally!
So when I drive the Babe magnet, I cannot help remembering what she means to me and now 10 years of marriage later it reminds me how thrilling it all was to be free and topless of course!

Is there a special music track you played over and over as you did your journey? Mine is to drive along the Amalfi coast, in a convertable sports car, top down whilst playing Barry White's 'Love's Theme'! A dream that one day I will achieve I hope!

Great post - I have a fifteen year old S Class Merc that I bought brand new for a flippin fortune and I will not trade it in now as I love it. It still drives like a dream - in fact I am going to write a post about it one day, such is my absolute love and adoration for it. I completly empathise with your love of your mechanical lurve machine. I remember your post about your old 4 wheel drive was it, or was it a land Rover that finally went off to the big scrap yard in the sky last year? I gro3w very attached to my automobiles - we are clearly of the same ilk! X

I'm another topless one! My sporty little Miata is candy apple red and is named The Little Toy Car. I love to put the top down and head up over the Malahat in the sunshine. Somehow a drive to work is way more fun in a sports car.
You owe a lot to your little toy car!

It's VERY eco going in a topless sports car. Means you don't have to have the air conditioning on.

Lovely story.

One of my loveliest memories is driving home after my younger brother's wedding with my older brother, in his MGB GT. We didn't have a map, and got horribly lost, wending our way around the Cotswolds and Oxfordshire, on a gloriously sunny August evening. Fabulous.

MOB - The Beautiful South's Rotterdam was the track not desperately sexy but cool at the time! As for my wonderful Land Rover - Dora - it still hurts...
Pondside - Dobn't I know it! You can't helps smiling when you're topless:)
Iota - I think we all have memories of summer days and golden grasses like that. I hope my boys have plenty of them too!
P.S. Will remember the air con excuse when next facing aprobation at the school gates.

Great story - and have you read Millenium Housewife's last post about search engines? Be prepared for some interesting visits!

Lovely tale! I go topless part-time and only in Devon! (A friend has a wonderful Z3). I'm filled with envy here (in my resolutely top-on CR-V).

ChisH - I'd like to say it's still romantic but I have just come in from unloading 2,000 bricks off a decrepid trailer with the immortal words from him: "You do alright don't you..." not "I love you" or antything else noteworthy just that I am alright....
Potty - have just dashed over to Millennium Housewife's bog and well it's going to be bad isn't it!? I'll let you know...
Preseli Mags - Z3s are so slinky I think I should be envious of you and all those wonderful wiggly lanes in Devon!

oh dear Tattie, prepare for a flurry of inappropriate google hits. You have been warned...MH

yup, there'll be lads hoping for photos, mind you they'll switch allegiance pretty quickly when they see the subject matter and STILL want photos. Never done it - oo-er missus - apart from with a boyfriend. Big mistake, hair like candyfloss come the end.

Millennium Housewife - so far so little but there again it is still daylight!
Expat Mum - a little tease goes a long way and it was fun!
Bodran - I shall persuade DC that we need it in New Quay and then you and I shall go topless together all the way to Cei Bach and beyond!
Milla - Candyfloss hair what can I say? Cut mine off ages ago for just that reason. Still waiting for the influx of lads. DC says I should be so lucky - cheeky beggar!

Ah but to say you do all right is the highest praise, love incarnate!
Love the blog. I had a mercedes SLK for a couple of years, totally impractical but loved it.

We used to have 2CV's and it was great rolling back the hood. Now I only have a sunroof in my little car but better than nothing.

Thanks for sharing your story. Sweet and lovely. Totally romantic!

And if you terrify the locals, think of this -- what would happen to them if they saw a Bear with no clothes at all?

Tattieweasle said...

Elizabethm - its pretty OK to be alright. I think I get him after 10 years...however, it will depend on if he remembers. Do you think I should remind him? As for SLK's they are so lovely does it matter if they are impractical?
Cait - I love 2CVs such sunny cars. Bluebottle the small blue annoying loud thing ( The VW Polo) doesn't have a sunroof and I feel very trapped when I drive. The next time we get a new car I will insit we have a sunroof. In the meantime I'm out in Babe as much as poss - topless of course!
Rob-bear - a bare bear?!! Actually I don't think anything would shock the locals anymore just wishful thinking on my behalf...;)

Go on you know you want to...
