K.I.S.S.I.N.G

Harry and Sally sitting in a tree:
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First comes love,
then
comes marriage,
then comes Sally and the baby carriage

Ah yes it was bound to happen sooner or later – for me it was Robin trying to pull up my skirt to see my knickers – the indignity especially as he was younger than me!
However, unlike me, The Boy is the instigator rather than the victim in this little playground scenario.
Strolling into school – early for once – The Boy was accosted by another Mummy.
With mock severity she says:
“What have you been doing to my daughter in the playground? Her Daddy is gonna’ come and get you!”
The Boy just giggles and squirms and I notice for the first time that he really does blush.
Me: “What have you been up to?”
OM: “Hasn’t he told you?”
Me: “No, it seems he’s already keeping secrets from me. What DID you do?”
The Boy answers from the depths of my skirt and I miss the crucial words as he gets an attack of the giggles again egged on by his friends who are all whooping at his embarrassment.
ME; “Spit it out monster.”
The Boy shouts: “Kissin’!”
Me: “Kissing!”
Oh My God we’re at that stage already. Kissing in the playground. Now most people would be fine about it – and I am really - but there is a certain amount of trepidation because you see I was kissed by Dear Charlie when I was only four and a half and look what happened to us!
On my way back home I realise that I could easily be looking at my future daughter-in-law and a little bit of me sinks somewhat. All day I try to put it to the back of my mind but it keeps springing back up.
Returning to school I laugh with the other mothers in the playground about these latest antics and secretly I ponder whether I would want any of them as in-laws for my son. I reason that on the whole I get on with all of them and I actually like most of the girls in The Boy’s class – it could be worse.
As they file out and say their “Good Afternoons” I watch The Boy. He catches my eye and grins and runs off laughing with the others for a few snatched moments before being rounded up by respective mothers to head home for tea.
They’re all in a huddle and suddenly I hear that old chant about K.I.S.S.I.N.G and damn me if it’s not about him with another girl. I have a feeling that my Son might just be a little bit of a tart.
(PS. I am secretly very pleased – he’s obviously quite a catch.)

T11 is just like that. Had his first girlfriend at 3 and hasn't looked back since. Onto about number 103 by now, we'll be running out of girls soon in the West of England and he might have to come and cradle snatch some of The Boy's castoffs - alternatively the boy might fancy an older woman, Gloucestershire variety. They could share. F9 on the other hand who does, surprisingly, have a most beautiful girl, L10 (get that, a year older!) still mutters that "Oi 'ate gurrllls, Oi'm not marrying L10" etc. And while L10 is beautiful, her mother is not the sort of person I want to sit across the table from for Christmas after Christmas (if I live that long) so it's not a romance I feel compelled to foster.

Oh that's so funny.
E, my six year old gdd confided in me at the weekend about which boy in school she fancies. I am sworn to secrecy as only Mum, Dad and her two sisters know.

Let's face it, if we made life decisions based on some of the in-laws we might obtain, we'd all be paralyzed with fear and still single! Best not to think about it.

How sweet - I think! This is just the begining, Tattie!

My son was deeply struck by a girl in his class when he was about eight. He is getting married this summer (not to her though, I dont think he can remember her name, although he can remember what she looked like!)

Aw tart, or not that is very sweet.

Robot Boy had the same girlfriend from the age of four until 11 when we moved to Scotland. She was awfully bossy . . . Wildchild wasn't impressed. Ah well what will be will be . . . and we won't have much say in it.

So what's the chant you refer to?

Hi Chairman Bill thanks for dropping by. Here's the chant:
Harry and Sally sitting in a tree:
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First comes love,
then comes marriage,
then comes Sally and the baby carriage!

Aha - never heard that one before. Must be a rhyme with a regional bias.

I loved your post. I could see you observing all those future daughter-in-laws. Christ what a thought! He might very well turn out to be a bit of a heart breaker until he finds his own heart broken and then settles down with a lovely girl who is willing to take care of you in your old age, cooks, shops, cleans for you and dreads the day you die.....and then we all wake up!

You have a fab writing style, so easy and witty to read and enjoy.

Too funny! I have one DIL who has made me a Nana, and a potential SIL waiting in the wings. Neither is like any of those children I watched, like you, in the playground.
I've just caught up with your latest posts, TW and have left a comment on your sisters post.

What a handsome little devil he must be!
My eldest daughter fell in love at 7 or 8 and courted steadily until she was 11 (with the same boy I must add)...ahhh! He used to ask her for a kiss and she would tell him he had to wait until she was 16, bless! They still go gooeey if they ever run into eachother now!

I love this post, both my daughters, J10 and A8 have boyfriends. It makes me laugh when they tell me someone asked them out! I say to them 'next time someone asks you out, ask them where they are taking you and what time should you be ready?'

Go on you know you want to...
